FULL PODCAST: https://lovethenorth.ca/article/261009-sudbury-ward-11-amy-voz For someone escaping homelessness, recovering from addiction, and trying to rebuild their life, finding a safe place to live can become one of the greatest challenges. Greater Sudbury Ward 11 candidate Amy Voz works directly in addiction recovery and housing support. In this Love the North conversation, she explains the enormous barriers people face when trying to reestablish themselves in society. Getting into detox or treatment is difficult enough. But what happens afterward? Even with financial assistance, finding an affordable apartment can feel impossible. Voz describes housing budgets of approximately $1,400 per month, leaving very few suitable options. And the obstacles don't stop there. • Criminal records and past mistakes that follow people for years. • Poor credit and limited employment history. • Landlords hesitant to rent to someone rebuilding their life. • A shortage of affordable housing. • Rental units affected by bedbugs, cockroaches, rats, and mice. Imagine working tirelessly to overcome addiction, only to discover that society has made it nearly impossible to start over. Without safe, stable housing, the progress made through treatment can quickly be jeopardized. **How can we expect people to break the cycle of homelessness and addiction when we haven't created a realistic pathway back into society?** Voz emphasizes that recovery doesn't end when treatment is completed. People need housing, ongoing support, and opportunities to become productive, contributing members of their communities. This isn't just about homelessness. It's about second chances, dignity, and addressing the root causes instead of repeatedly dealing with the consequences. What needs to change in Greater Sudbury?
