Greater Sudbury Ward 9 candidate James Borg believes the city should be thinking much bigger when it comes to its future entertainment facilities. In his Love the North interview, Borg challenges the current downtown Events Centre project and proposes a completely different approach: a privately funded arena with no fewer than 16,000 seats. His vision involves attracting private investors, including successful local businesspeople and mining entrepreneurs, to finance a major entertainment and sporting venue. Why 16,000 seats? Borg argues that major touring acts like AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and internationally recognized country performers need larger audiences to make their concerts financially worthwhile. Between the musicians, touring crews, lighting, sound equipment, transportation, and production costs, ticket revenue becomes critical. A larger arena could also open the door to professional hockey, women's hockey, major sporting events, and other entertainment opportunities that currently bypass Sudbury. **But here's the bigger question: Why should taxpayers carry the financial burden when private investors could potentially build and operate the facility?** Borg believes an arena should be an economic opportunity, not another enormous municipal expense. Of course, attracting investors, securing major performers, and making a 16,000-seat facility profitable would require a convincing business case. Could Greater Sudbury support a privately financed arena of this size, or would it be too ambitious for our market?
